Beam Replacement, Floor Restoration & Heritage Detailing

The existing timber beam, decking boards and floor joists to this Paddington terrace had stood the test of time, but were at the end of their life — rotted, decayed and at real risk of collapse.

We were engaged to undertake the rebuilding and repairs, which included removing the cast iron handrails and lacework, the decayed floorboards, and the large timber beam spanning the full width of the terrace.

We salvaged the large decorative timber scotia moulding, which luckily had been made from Western Red Cedar — a timber that lasts forever. We routed new stop chamfers to the new beam to match the old one, installed it along with the new crossbeams, and re-fitted the salvaged cedar scotia.

New hardwood floorboards were hand-nailed using dome-head stainless decking nails, and the wrought-iron lacework and handrails were reinstated.

We also carried out some minor running repairs to the French doors leading onto the balcony and to the windows below.
